How to Read a Research Paper in Three Passes

A step-by-step method used by graduate students to understand dense academic papers without getting lost.

By Dr. Ananya Rao, Learning Researcher1 min read

Research papers are not meant to be read top to bottom in one go.

Pass 1: The bird's-eye view (10 minutes)

Read the title, abstract, introduction, headings and conclusion.

Pass 2: The content (1 hour)

Study the figures carefully. Note unfamiliar terms and references.

Pass 3: The deep dive

Try to re-derive the argument. Challenge every assumption.

Keep notes

Write a five-sentence summary after each paper.
