7 Active Learning Strategies Any Teacher Can Use Tomorrow

Low-prep techniques — think-pair-share, exit tickets, and more — that turn lectures into conversations.

Active learning does not need new technology or a smaller class.

1. Think–pair–share

Pose a question, give one minute of silent thinking, then two minutes in pairs.

2. Exit tickets

End class with one question on a slip of paper. Read them before the next session.

3. The muddiest point

Ask: "What was least clear today?"

4. Jigsaw groups

Each group masters one part and teaches the others.

5. Predict–observe–explain

Ask learners to predict an outcome before a demonstration.

6. Minute papers

Two minutes to summarise the main idea in their own words.

7. Cold-calling with warmth

Give thinking time first, and make it safe to say "I'm not sure yet".
